ABOUT US

Situated in the Apostolic Vicariate of Istanbul-Ankara, the Catholic Church in Ankara is an international and multi-ritual Christian community organized in one parish but gathering in two places of worship:

The Turkish speaking community, made of people sharing in Roman and Eastern rites (such as Armenian and Syrian), gathers every Sunday in the Azize Tereza Church on the French Embassy ground in Ulus, following mainly the Roman rite in Turkish. It welcomes as well on a regular basis Christians belonging to Eastern denominations in the absence of their pastors in Ankara. Moreover, during the week Azize Tereza Church is open to any person wishing to pray, to speak with a priest or simply to visit or ask questions.

The foreign speaking community, coming from all around the world and therefore made of people sharing in different cultures and mother tongues, gathers every Sunday in the Meryem Ana Church, on the Apostolic Nunciature grounds, in Çankaya, using English as its main language. It also welcomes people belonging to other Christian denominations, and its worship services are open to everybody. A French speaking community gathers from time to time as well. The German speaking community also sometimes uses the facilities of the parish for special activities.

The pastoral care of the whole parish with its two places of worship is entrusted to the small international team of Jesuit priests living in the Ulus-based Azize Tereza Church, where they welcome all visitors. Outside of their involvement in pastoral work, members of the Jesuit Community dedicate themselves to academic work especially in the field of philosophy, theology and sciences of religions for the sake of inter-religious dialogue. For this purpose, they own a small library specializing in Christian Theology.
